Digital cash replacement from Royal Canadian Mint in the works | Toronto Star.

It was only a year ago when the Mint launched its successful MintChip challenge, and although quietly their project keeps rolling on the right track, getting a lot of attention from reputable experts in the emerging payments industry. A key supporter to the Mint is David Everett, who spun the concept of Smart cards for micro payments in the 1990s. The technology wasn’t ready then, but we are hopeful that the right conditions are set now. The implementation of the MintChip will be a crucial next step.
